National Claims Manager
Velocity Express has one of the largest, time-definite nationwide delivery networks, providing a national footprint for customers desiring same day service throughout the United States. We are looking for a National Claims Manager based in our New York City office.
This position is responsible for managing claims on a national basis. Oversees insurance claims for property, cargo or casualty loss based on coverage, appraisal, and verifiable damages. Ensures complete and sound claim settlements, legal reviews and investigations when necessary. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Oversees risk management and loss prevention for the company
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Denies, settles, or authorizes payments of property/casualty claims based on coverage, appraisal, and verifiable damage
Corresponds with employees, claimants, witnesses, attorneys, etc. to gather important information to support contested claims in court
Verifies the completion and validity of claim forms and reviews company records to determine coverage
Reviews, evaluates and processes claims and makes recommendations for resolution
Plans and directs all aspects of an organization's claims function
Directs the review and settlement of complex or high dollar claims
Develops procedures and policies to enhance and improve the processing, investigation, and settlement of claims
Conducts and coordinates loss investigations
Documents all claim file activities and recommends further action on claims that exceed authority limits
Participates in arbitration, mediation and alternative dispute resolution programs
Prepares and files appropriate state mandated forms and manages claims in accordance with regulatory guidelines
Follows litigation management guidelines and provides oversight to defense counsel to ensure cost effective and aggressive claim file handling
Identifies subrogation potential and pursues third party recovery
Functions as company contact and attends claim reviews as necessary
Oversees claims management for vehicular accidents
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May be responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of temporary or permanent employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Generally requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and associate’s degree or equivalent training and experience, and two to five years of experience in the industry. Also requires a working knowledge of relevant federal, state and local regulations, specifically Workers Compensation Laws and Regulations.
