Lead Network Engineer
POSITION SUMMARY:
Design, implement, document, support, and troubleshoot all IP networks within the Washington Market under Network Engineering. This would include review of all interconnects and compatibility with existing and future network designs.
MAJOR DUTIES: (May perform any or all of the following duties)
- Assist with the design and deployment of the Comcast Regional and National TCP/IP network.
- Will assist with the review of network performance, and with the Data Networking Engineering group.
- Work with other members of Data Network Engineering team and Cable systems.
- This position requires an extensive knowledge of LAN’s/WAN’s.
- A working knowledge of how CATV Headend and distribution systems operate.
- Accept responsibility to ensure that network failures are restored in a timely manner.
- Participate in the review of catastrophic failures and provide feedback to prevent future occurrences.
- Assist the MIS, Engineering and Technical departments in correcting problems associated with Internet services, IP telephony and assorted networking systems.
- Provide monthly reports to department manager.
- Reprogram and upgrade network software when needed.
- Be available for on-call responsibilities.
- Be available to monitor the cable network status monitoring system.
- Some travel may be required.
Required Skills:
EDUCATION:
- BS in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
- Several years of experience with TCP/IP networking in an ISP environment can be substituted.
- Extensive knowledge of electronics, computer networks and fiber optic systems required.
- Additional formal training in the field of Computer Networking is preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Preferably the candidate would have experience working with cable television return paths, lashups and routers.
- Good basic understanding of the Internet protocol suite (e.g. ARP, IP, TCP, DNS and SNMP, IGMP.)
- The candidate should have a good understanding of class-less inter-domain routing (CIDR) and commonly used lower-layer technologies (e.g. Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, T1/T3 lease-lines and cable modems.)
- Familiarity with both Windows and Unix operating systems, including experience with common TCP/IP testing tools (tcpdump, ping and tracerouter.)
- Experience with IP routers, switches (Extreme and Cisco) and a Cable Modem is desired.
- Experience writing shell scripts and/or C is a plus.
- An ISP background or experience with large-scale IP networks is a plus.
- Proven analytical and problem solving abilities.
- Computer skills (Word, Excel, and Visio)
- Must be able to communicate and get along well with others.
- Must be able to perform well under stressful situations.
- Must be self-motivated and take the initiative when necessary.
