Field Engineer - Kent, WA

Position Summary:

The primary responsibility of this position will be installation, commissioning, maintenance and troubleshooting of optical transmission systems within the AboveNet fiber optic network, with occasional travel within the United States. Performs various day-to-day functions associated with regional telecommunications operations. Will share in the rotation of after hours Emergency On-Call response schedule and must be willing to work after regular office hours, on weekends and holidays on an as-needed basis. Additional responsibilities are assisting the field operations team with OSP functions such as cable locates, one-call response, hardware maintenance, site maintenance and cleaning, and new location surveys for AboveNet regional operations activities. Required to assist local field operations anytime in case of emergency restoration or customer circuit troubleshooting.

Responsibilities:

A. Pre-operational: • Perform installation and installation, commissioning, troubleshooting and handling optical transmission systems; • Perform OTDR, Ethernet, BER and SONET acceptance testing; • Assist the AboveNet Engineering Department with network construction activities and required Fiber Engineering paperwork including but not limited to: Route forms, Splice Engineering packages, Red Lines and As Builts; • Monitor contractor and sub-contractors performing conduit installation, cable placement and splicing; • Provide preliminary site surveys for building entrance construction requirements and equipment space availability; • Assist Real Estate personnel and monitor contractors during building construction; • Provide support for all contractor splicing activities. This support includes continuity testing, OTDR trace analysis and optical power meter data of fiber optic cable; • Responsible for installation and testing of fiber optic patch cords; • Perform cable splicing and fiber acceptance testing; • Monitor contractor, vendor and customer co-location installations, equipment placement and testing; • Provide daily status reports to Operations Project Management. • Perform cable locates and protect AboveNet’s cable plant. Participate in local On Call schedule rotation work on weekends at night and holidays.

B. Post Operational: • Responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting and maintenance of optical transmission systems; • Responsible for problem life cycle management (isolation, tracking, and resolution); • Responsible for cable locates and relocate requirements. • Follow Established Site Preventive Maintenance Practices. • Operations liaison to customers through extensive communications with customer peers; • Monitor contractor, vendor and customer co-location requirements; • Monitor contractors, vendors and customers working on the Abovenet plant; • Provide status reports to Operations Manager as required.

• The individual must comply with departmental and corporate internal controls and all internal controls processes; • The individual must possess and employ the highest ethical and business standards and always conduct himself/herself with the greatest degree of professional integrity; • Other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager to insure the orderly operation of the network.

Requirements:

• Military or technical training in associated discipline or equivalent experience; • Minimum of two (2) years training or experience in the operation of transmission networks; • Proficient with Visio, MS Outlook, MapPoint 2004, as built reading and construction plan reading. • Background in the Operations and Maintenance of transmission networks. • Familiarity with the following desired: underground and aerial fiber optic cable networks; Lucent LGX and ADC fiber distribution and test systems; Nortel, Ciena and Cisco WDM/DWDM and SONET transmission equipment; Cisco and Juniper routers, switches, hubs; transmission network alarm and surveillance systems; fire suppression systems; Generators; AC and DC power plants; OTDR and Power Meter test equipment; Ethernet and BER test equipment; fusion splice machines; cable location equipment. • Knowledge in technical disciplines as associated with operations in the inside and outside plant environment. • Experience with fiber optic cable testing, splicing or provisioning.
