Senior Manager of Finance
The New York Times Company is seeking a Senior Manager of Finance for its fast-paced, rapidly changing Shared Services Center. The New York Times Shared Services Center (SSC) is the business solution provider for one of the world's premier media companies. Located at the World Trade Center in downtown Norfolk, Virginia, the SSC is a centralized facility for streamlining many of the Company's core functions in Benefits Administration, Financial Services, Strategic Sourcing and Information Technology.
Responsible for developing and successfully executing the strategic objectives for centralization of financial accounting functions for The New York Times Company. Incumbent will oversee the 18-24 month transition of financial reconciliations, end-to-end accounting and financial statement reporting and analytics from various operating groups to the Shared Services Center; and will manage the end-state operations.
- Provide overall leadership to the department ensuring all deadlines are met and customer issues, concerns and questions are resolved in accordance with established service level agreements.
- Provide planning, direction, and review to ensure that reconciliations, month-end close, reporting, and internal control procedures are performed accurately and timely.
- Plan and manage the transition of new work into the department and ensure that documentation is maintained and kept current.
- Build and maintain strategic partnerships with key finance colleagues across the Company.
- Recommend, develop and implement new processes to continually improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the department.
- Provide company-wide internal/external audit support. Provide Sarbanes-Oxley support to ensure the Company maintains strong internal controls.
- Participate on senior management team to plan and execute the Shared Services Center mission and strategy.
- Build and maintain a diverse staff of competent employees; manage employee performance and productivity; provide feedback that facilitates staff development.
- Function as a resource for the department staff and coach and counsel them to assist in the resolution of complex problems/issues.
- Manage special projects as assigned, operating effectively under changing circumstances/environment.
- Four to eight years in financial accounting, with a mix of public and private accounting experience preferred.
- Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance
- CPA or equivalent experience
- Experience managing account reconciliations, month-end close and financial statement preparation and analysis.
- Experience in reviewing staff workpapers for accuracy, timeliness and GAAP compliance
- Experience adjusting priorities in fast-paced, rapidly changing work environments strongly preferred
- Ability to manage a team in an environment undergoing change
- Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as listening skills.
- Analytical, strategic and tactical. Ability to see the big picture while managing the details.
- Excellent relationship building and teamwork skills.
