The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society provides to its members and the worldwide scientific community a comprehensive collection of high quality information products and services for the practice and advancement of the chemical sciences. The Journals Publishing Group publishes over 30 internationally respected, high quality, peer-reviewed journals of research and other information that serves the broad interests of the chemical-related scientific and engineering markets.
Position Summary
Core responsibilities will involve, but not be limited to: assisting the Managing Editor and JACS Editor with the assignment of manuscripts to Associate Editors and interfacing with them during the peer-review process; representing the journal with a high degree of professionalism in both written and oral communications; answering chemistry-related technical questions arising in the JACS Editorial Office, including assisting with CIF and Supplemental Information file checks and data corrections; and updating and monitoring changes in the JACS database of international referees. Depending on the interests and qualification of the chosen candidate, the Assistant Managing Editor may also work with the Managing Editor and the JACS Editor in implementing new content features for the journal and novel functionality for its web presence, specifically assisting with collection and submission to ACS Production the weekly rotating cover figures. The incumbent will:
1. Ensure that the publication is produced on time, on budget, and in a consistent format with appropriate levels of quality in both content and functionality.
2. Oversee quality control tasks on the publication such as copyediting and proofreading, reviewing galley proofs for accuracy and consistency, and assuring appropriateness of figures and illustrative material.
3. Work with editors and production staff to ensure timely, accurate, and consistent production of the publication’s research material and the weekly rotating cover figures.
4. Manage the print publishing schedule.
This position will be sited in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the JACS Editorial Office.
Education, Experience and Technical Requirements
Advanced degree required (Ph.D. preferred, Masters required), major in chemistry or related science preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication, and decision making required, Ability to work under time pressure and manage multiple priorities.
