POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Balm In Gilead is an 18-year old advocacy and faith-based capacity building organization that addresses HIV/AIDS and other health disparities in the African American community and in Africa. With three regional and international offices, this position helps support Corporate Operations in Richmond, VA.
The Balm In Gilead, Inc.™ is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization whose mission is to improve the health status of people of the African Diaspora by building the capacity of faith communities to address life-threatening diseases, especially HIV/AIDS.
Under the direction of the Founder/CEO, the Grants Writer main task is to write and develop grant proposals. Serve as manager, editor and/or principal writer for a wide variety of print and electronic projects. This entails consulting, utilizing needs assessments, research, drafting and submission of government, foundation and corporate funding proposals for individuals, corporations, foundations and other organizations; capital campaign-related promotional materials; annual reports and project summaries for a diverse array of fund-raising goals. Implement use of best practices in proposal development to conduct research for understanding of branding and positioning strategies for effective fund raising.
The position requires a detail-oriented and motivated team player to write and lead our proposal development process. This position requires strong grant writing experience and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Prior experience in a not-for-profit organization is a plus. Must have the ability to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals; be very flexible.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Research and write major grant proposals.Research, read, analyze and summarize government foundation and corporate grand guidelines.Develop letters of intent and applications.Work with staff and other appropriate contacts to gather necessary data and information to support grants content.Work with Fiscal Director to develop final budget formats.Manage writing projects, from inception through delivery to include time management tools.Write and edit additional Development-oriented copy as assigned.Develop, package and produce editorial content for websites and provide periodical updated content for Development sections of website.Create fund-raising project summaries, funding proposals, reports and other written materials for internal and external audiences to include web content.Develop and maintain a tracking system that supports the accurate and timely submission of grant related reports as appropriate.Prepare reports as required.Performs other duties as assigned or requested.REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Education and Experience: Bachelors Degree. Minimum 5 years experience in grant writing and successful results in grant fund raising. Demonstrated excellent research, writing skills. Effective experience with national and international foundation guidelines and public sector giving. Some work experience working with faith-based institutions, community-based organizations, nonprofit organizations, grassroots organizations and/or public agencies desired.Communication Skills: Well developed communication skills and ability to relate to individuals on all levels. Correct English usage, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills. Ability to easily change writing styles to fit the audience.Computer/Office Equipment Skills: Must have highly developed skills in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Knowledge and experience in Publisher and other graphic software is desirable.Other Special Skills: Broad knowledge of HIV/AIDS prevention and other health disparities. Ability to take oral and written directions, manage multiple tasks with shifting priorities and to be a team player. Ability to work with minimal supervision and ability to work both collaboratively and independently. Strong project management skills to manage short term projects and manage time effectively. Effective problem solving, interpersonal skills, organizational skills. Effective Experience with the African American faith community a plus. Ability to be flexible in a work environment with frequent interruptions. Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.HOW TO APPLY
