Senior Engineer, Technical Services

PURPOSE:

 

The Senior Engineer will work in a quasi matrix structure directly reporting to the Manager Mine Engineering – Inverness, Denver. The Senior Engineer is a specialist in advanced mine planning costing and or scheduling techniques will lead development of the standard of mine planning advanced systems across Newmont operations.

 

The Senior Engineer is an integral part of Inverness Technical Services to provide mining engineering services to meet the business needs to fill the project pipeline and support existing operations at Newmont. The Senior Engineer performs complex engineering duties as part of a team or individually contributing on major projects with significant business impact to Newmont. The Senior Engineer brings a specialized range of expertise in mine engineering, a breadth of experience, and demonstrated judgement to mining engineering at Newmont operations and projects.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

 

§  Setup and use of advanced mine cost estimation and scheduling software to produce scheduling and equipment productivity assessments, material movements, equipment requirements, manning levels, plus capital and operating costs to be completed from short to long range re-forecasts, budget development, and Stage Gate Life of Mine projects.

§  Setup tactical scheduling systems, train other Mine Engineers on these systems and use the systems in routine project work.

§  Working on M&A and early stage gate work, requires the Senior Engineer to utilize a varied background of experience to rely both on a first principles cost benefit analysis and the practical approach when solving interpretative “once off” situations.

§  The Senior Engineer will assist operations and perform investigations in order to report on and recommend changes to design or operational practice, in pursuit of improvements to business, and determining the applicability of such changes to other Newmont sites. All this being done in cooperation with other appropriate disciplines including Continuous Improvement, site senior, middle and lower management levels.

§  Utilization of varied mining engineering skills to situations of design or operational complexity. This includes the selection, testing, recommendation, implementation and modification of industry best available mine engineering; recommendation of, and input to, decisions regarding new technology applications.

§  Produce short/medium/long term schedules for mining operations, including material movements, equipment requirements, manning levels plus capital and operating costs.

§  Ensure mine planning and economic evaluation of surface mining at Newmont Mining Corporation maximizes the value of the business.

§  Ensure that when approaching each project, however different from the others, that an adaptive approach is taken to properly define the problem and determine appropriate solutions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

The Senior Engineer is based at the Denver office in Colorado.  Performance of the work requires travel to domestic and international operations.

 

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:

 

Candidates are encouraged to apply if most of the essential experience and some of the desired experience is met.

 

Essential Work Experience:

§  Tertiary Qualification in Mine Engineering, with a B. Sc. Degree. Usually, 6+ years of experience is necessary to gain the desired exposures. M. Sc. or PhD may credit towards years of experience

§  Mine design experience in a range of mining applications.

§  Experience in differing ore deposits for gold and multi-element base metals.

§  Experience in LTP, STP and Ore Control.

§  Competence in the use of mine planning software, including optimal scheduling techniques and cash flow analysis.

§  Advanced skills in mine cost estimation and truck and loader simulation software, or similar advanced cost estimation software’s.

§  Ability to build and maintain strong communications network with peers, Project Managers, and Chief Engineers.

§  Strong problem solving and 3D visualization skills.

§  Strong technical writing, group presentation, and interpersonal skills including cultural sensitivity.

 

Desired Work Experience:

§  Underground experience.

§  Previous overseas work experience.

§  Knowledge of Au and Cu/Au ore body processing.

§  Site mine planning experience in multi mine, multi process situations desirable.

§  Site experience dealing with Acid and impacted water management, desirable.

§  Varied knowledge of mine methods, mine design, production scheduling, equipment selection, reserve estimation, and mine cost development.

§  Bilingual skills, or English as a second language, a plus.
