Buyer - Temporary
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: THIS POSITION IS TEMPORARY (3 - 4 MONTHS) This position is primarily responsible for the efficient and cost effective procurement of goods and services as described and requested by company staff. These purchases should be made within established company policies, procedures and guidelines. Achieving cost savings and investigating new concepts for cost savings are additional elements of this position. The ability to build and maintain positive relationships with suppliers, coworkers and shipyard personnel is essential. Also, ability to negotiate well and the desire to obtain best value are critical.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
· Negotiate and purchase items as requested by authorized personnel to support ongoing repair of Foss vessels, customer vessels, and operational requirements. These purchases include those products and services required by a major marine services company and would include industrial and commercial commodities as well. Specific commodities are assigned by Department Manager based upon company requirements and are subject to change at the discretion of the company.
· Review requirements and make purchases based on computer generated order guidelines.
· Research and resolve discrepancies related to invoices.
· Provide back-up as needed to other Buyers to meet demands of shipyard activity, special projects and department workload.
· Set internal re-order points based on usage information and monitor stock levels.
· Review inventory levels, identify and remove slow moving parts.
· Provide information and assistance as requested by engineers, estimating and operations personnel to assist in preparation of upcoming quotes, projects and planning.
· The ability to manage supplier performance to not only ensure contract terms are met, but also to drive collaborative efforts for continuous improvement.
· Work with internal customers and coworkers for process improvement and increased efficiency.
· Work with manager and other buyers to develop both a short-term and a long-term strategic plan assigned commodities.
· Mentor Jr. Buyer, providing leadership and coaching where needed.
· Foster a learning environment, where individuals are encouraged to continually grow professionally and stretch their abilities.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
· Working knowledge of automated terminal access purchasing, inventory control, receiving and accounts payable systems.
· Understanding of Purchasing concepts, contracts, and law of accounting principles. Procurement ethics and legal
guidelines.
· Technical materials and related information applicable to the marine industry.
· Problem solving, basic accounting skills, negotiating, basic working knowledge of Windows Office, and sufficient computer proficiency to quickly lean/understand new software applications as they come online.
JOB CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENT:
· Work is generally performed in an office environment.
· Environment and conditions require ability to go outside in all types of weather and temperatures.
· The work day usually has a high number of interruptions and priority changes necessitating the need to remain flexible and focused in order to accomplish tasks.
· Must be able to regularly work long hours to meet demands of shipyard activity, special projects and departmental workload.
· Must be able to ascend and descend stairs.
· Regular and predictable attendance is required.· Must be able to work under stress during the busy season.
WORK EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:
· Three or more years purchasing experience. Five years or more preferably within the maritime industry.
· Prior history working with engineers and technical support staff.
· High school diploma with college level courses or degree preferred. A.P.P. and/or C.P.M certificates desirable. Must have either Marine experience or SAP experience.
