PRINCIPAL STAFF SCIENTIST
PURPOSE: To provide expertise and lead development of research-based competencies in support of multiple biopharmaceutical discovery projects aimed at the identification and early development of novel therapeutics for the control of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Assist Director in managing the scientific network within the area of the control of autoimmunity and inflammation and in driving target identification and validation of novel research targets. Provide support in other aspects of company activities in the assigned therapeutic area.RELATIONSHIPS:Reports to the (Associate/Senior) Director. Internal relationships include working with research site management, the project teams, as well as research colleagues internally and globally. External relationships include working with therapeutic area key opinion leaders and the medical and research community.PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:SCIENTIFIC ROLE:• Day to day supervision of research personnel in a targeted Discovery area.• Provide unified research-driven innovation and continuous improvement within own Department and across Departments.• Implement and supervise laboratory studies in support of autoimmunity and inflammation research. • Assume responsibility for project design and implementation.• Develop and manage relevant research protocols in support of Discovery efforts.• Interpret and properly document experimental data.• Maintain current awareness of scientific literature in targeted Discovery area.• Draft scientific reports and prepare presentation slides.• Achieve business goals, share information, learnings, knowledge and skills and promote cross-functional teamwork.• Ensure appropriate level of communication with other Directors and with Project Managers.• Provide a safe and functional research environment.• Work with Director to define and implement therapy area-focused research strategies consistent with organizational goals.• Maintain therapeutic area focus and attention to clinical need. Ensure regulatory relevance.• Actively review patents and patent applications in areas of research relevance and identify opportunities.• Communicate regularly with international colleagues within Novo Nordisk.MEDICAL AND RESEARCH COMMUNITY LIAISON:• Expand and manage existing external research network.• Identify potential external collaborators within scientific area and initiate research programs within focus areas.• Use networking opportunities to provide research opportunities with NNIRC.• Write, review and approve collaborative research manuscripts.• In compliance with the research strategy and in collaboration with the project teams, identify and expand external research contacts.• Attend appropriate external scientific meeting and, where possible, present data. SCIENTIFIC SUPPORT FOR OTHER COMPANY ACTIVITIES:• Provide internal education and ongoing scientific support as needed.• Oversee company interactions with the expert community (i.e. Advisory Boards, scientific meetings, etc).KEY SUCCESS FACTORS: EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS• PhD with minimum of 12 years relevant industry or basic/clinical research experience required or MS with a minimum of 16 years relevant experience required.• Prior research or related experience in autoimmunity and inflammation. • Proven innovative skills. Knowledge of the biopharmaceutical development process.• Substantial network within the assigned therapeutic area. • Strong scientific skills required. • Experience in the supervision and training of technical staff highly preferred.• Excellent written and oral communication skills required. • Flexibility and the ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment are required.• Excellent interpersonal and motivational skills.
