About You

You are a talented, motivated, results-driven Technical Operations lead or Senior Systems Engineer, who is passionate about operating systems at serious scale. You will lead in a broad range of technical areas including hardware, networking, databases, and system administration/engineering. You are curious, detail oriented, and organized. You have excellent written and verbal communication skills. You understand that rubber meets the road when we ship products and delight customers, and are willing to do what it takes to push yourself and your team to get there as efficiently as possible.

 

About Us

The Local Search Team is run as a startup within a well-known, resource-rich public company, and is charged with building innovative new local search products for consumers and merchants. The small team has been given the rare gift of autonomy and the mandate to innovate, and is hard at work on ideating, designing, and developing an industry-unique local search product. The Operations Lead will be responsible for helping us design, test, deploy and evolve those applications. Our parent company, Marchex (MCHX), is publicly traded, and a leader in the local search and advertising space.

 

About the Role

You will be expected to function with light guidance, to drive the limits of the team, and to proactively find better ways for us to deploy high quality systems. You will provide proactive support for a secure, reliable, scalable, and highly available environment. Developing systems that operate at the scale and with the reliability that Marchex requires is a unique and challenging technical problem. The systems our group is engaged in building include high-volume search and information retrieval services, integrations with other Marchex systems and assets, large-scale data management applications, and a unique set of consumer-facing Web interfaces.

 

Specific Tasks IncludeEstablish system procedures, including security, system resource monitoring, system tuning, capacity planning, backup/restore, and the successful transfer of deployments from development and QA environment to productionEnsure high availability and redundancy of critical system resources including recovery activities in the event of component failure, machine failure or larger disaster situationsEnsure appropriate runtime capacity and performance levels are established and managed; ensure the right technical infrastructure is in place to support business initiativesActively participate in the software and systems engineering work of the Local Search teamDrive implementation, including design, architecture, scripting, procurement, performance and other testing, deployment, maintenance, troubleshooting, education, and emergency response

 

Specific Qualifications7+ years experience with large scale system administration, application programming, networking, and data center infrastructureProven track record in the full life cycle of operations management, from design and architecture, through testing and deployment, to change management, monitoring and performance quality controlExperience with highly-trafficked consumer Web sitesExperience supporting internally developed, customer facing productsDeep experience in Unix system administrationKnowledge of Perl, MySQL.Knowledge of Lucene, Ruby, Ruby on Rails a huge plus.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and proven ability to work effectively with all organizational levels.
