Retail Store Manager

Petland General Manager Summary:  The General Manager is responsible for the performance of the entire store.  The general manager must follow Petland operating systems to ensure high standards of customer service, animal husbandry, presentation, sales performance and profits.  Job Requirements:  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written. • Ability to follow operating systems and directions from supervisors. • Flexibility and stamina to work retail hours. • Ability to understand financial statements. • Ability to manage a team of employees and managers.  • Must be able to comfortably and repetitively lift 25 lbs.  Responsibilities:  Maintain high levels of customer service and sales through Sales Managers and Pet Counselors. • Must teach, educate, influence, persuade, motivate and develop staff. • Must use the Petland Mission, 5-Step Sale and 4-Basic Needs sheets to provide great customer service. • Must maintain a high standard of appearance and professionalism with ones self and staff by maintaining good hygiene and the Petland uniform. • Ensure that employees maintain strong customer counts, high average tickets and dollars per hour through monitoring, use and review of employee scorecards. • Monitor and affect sales by department and sub-department, as well as ratios between pets and supplies, while maintaining an acceptable payroll percentage.  Maintain high level of animal husbandry and cleanliness through staff, particularly the kennel and fish department managers. • Ensure that all opening, daily, and closing procedures are followed flawlessly in all animal departments through the use of procedural checklists resulting in complete cleanliness. • Ensure that all pets’ health is monitored daily and proper records are kept. • Maintain a strong relationship with the store’s consulting veterinarian to ensure excellent care of the pets prior to and post sale.  Maintain a well-merchandised store through staff, particularly the inventory control manager. • Use the Point of Sale system for accurate inventories and for proper and effective ordering. • Process the orders quickly and accurately. • Keep all merchandise priced, neat, clean and fronted. • Effectively sign and display end caps, kits, stack outs, valences and specials. • Timely follow up on all vendor credits, coupons and rebates. • Maintain proper level of pets in all departments.  Maintain Business Monitors, paper work and record keeping. • Handle all banking procedures accurately and timely. • Provide sales, payables, receivables, inventories and other data accurately and timely to accountant to produce financial statements. • Analyze a variety of inventory and sales reports from the POS to improve business performance. • Analyze and take action for improvement from the results of the financial statements.  Maintain proper advertising, community service and marketing levels. • Promote the Club Pet Program through training, monitoring, promotion and signage. • Encourage and oversee active participation in Petland’s community service programs – Adopt-A-Pet,SM Stop Pet Overpopulation: Spay-Neuter, Pets for a Lifetime,SM Pet Therapy, and Safari Stan’s Children’s CharitiesSM -- by assigning a pet counselor to be the in-store “Community Service Specialist.” • Keep the store constantly and professionally signed. • Work from budgets to effectively implement advertising. • Work to include Petland community service messages in advertising, and, when appropriate, in the local media.  Perform other duties as assigned by the franchisee.
