Senior Structural Design Engineer

The Structure and Bridge Division seeks a licensed Professional Engineer with a work history in a goals-oriented environment to design complex bridges and other structures.  The selected candidate will serve as lead for bridge design teams and evaluate the design work of others.  Additional team-lead responsibilities include project management related to bridge design work and proficient use of structural engineering software programs.  The incumbent will administer complex consultant contracts for structural design which includes participation in consultant selection; evaluation of designs for constructability; conducting quality control assessments.  Contract administration also requires making recommendations pertaining to design plans based on specifications and standards and reviewing consultant vouchers for payment.  The position is customer focused in that the incumbent will coordinate with customers internal and external to the agency in problem identifcation and resolution. 

QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated work experience designing complex bridge plans and checking the design of bridge plans.  Demonstrated knowledge of contract procurement and administration of professional engineering services and project management of bridge design projects.  Demonstrated experience in leading a design team; developing cost estimates and quantities; quality control related to bridge plans design; using structural design software; MicroStation and PC with Microsoft Office software.  Demonstrated ability to establish objectives and goals; develop schedules and timeframes for completion of assignments; resolve problems and evaluate performance against established measures. Demonstrated knowledge of AASHTO specifications related to bridge design. B.S. in Civil Engineering with advanced level coursework in structural engineering.  Demonstated experience in project management.  Knowledge of bridge design using Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD).  Considerable experience in contract management for professional engineering services.  Knowledge of VDOT standards for bridge design.
