JOB DESCRIPTION
This position will support a wide variety of research and development efforts involving radiochemical separations and radiochemistry of low-level quantities of isotopes, with applications including nuclear forensics and homeland security. This position will have an emphasis on experimental studies and analytical methods development. The position will support a range of US Government and Private Clients. The research group seeking to fill this position supports a number of critical national security missions along with missions relating to environmental monitoring and restoration and industrial technology development. Projects within the research group range from highly applied projects in support of U.S. Government policy to fundamental projects in the areas of nuclear science and novel technology exploration. Expectations are that this entry level position will evolve to a position which will develop, manage, and execute and independent research program in the area of trace detection and analytical chemistry. Effective written and oral communication is required for this position. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively on diverse teams are required in addition to a record of research accomplishments.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
This position requires an advanced degree in chemistry, nuclear engineering, nuclear chemistry, or related field with a research emphasis in radiochemistry.
Level II: A Bachelor's degree with 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree with 0-2 years experience or a Ph.D. is required. Expected to contribute professionally, building a professional reputation for technical expertise. Fully applying and interpreting standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies. May be looked upon to lead specific tasks of a project to meet scope, schedule, and budget. Will be expected to assume technical responsibility for tasks involving multiple persons. Will recommend technical approach to solve problems subject to approval by senior staff.
Level III: A Bachelor's degree with at least 5 years experience or a Master's degree with 3 years experience or a Ph.D. with 1-2 years experience is required. Must be a skilled professional who applies a broad basis of existing theories, principles, and concepts to a specialty field. May be looked upon to manage small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks. Integrates intellectual and technical capabilities of work teams. Will be expected to lead technical decision-making at the task level within a project. Will have a key role in defining technical approach and setting technical direction.
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.
Position Requires a DOE Security Clearance (L or Q): Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B. All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs for 12 consecutive months can be demonstrated.
In order to reduce cycle time, internal and external solicitations of interest will run concurrently; however, qualified PNNL staff will be given first consideration.
