DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The Materials Chemistry Department supports a variety of customers with different materials science needs. The technologist team supports work in organic, composite, and electrodeposited materials.
JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a technologist to support the design, formulation, and engineering of various organic and inorganic materials. Working with different staff members and technologists throughout the company, this technologist will make items such as foams, coatings, and composite material structures, as well as items modified by electrodeposition, for various customers. The work will range from basic R&D accomplished under loose guidelines to rigorous component development performed under strict quality standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires the following qualifications: (1) a demonstrated commitment to safe and secure laboratory/shop operations, (2) demonstrated attention to detail in previous work experience, (3) demonstrated performance in a chemistry laboratory and/or an engineering shop environment, (4) a willingness to work with chemicals and hazardous waste per Sandia regulations, (5) basic computer competency, and (6) excellent documentation skills.
The following qualifications are desired for this position: (1) a bachelor’s or associates degree; (2) experience handling chemicals and performing chemical formulations; (3) experience with composite materials (fiberglass, graphite, or polymer-based); (4) experience with electrodeposition procedures, such as plating, cleaning, and coating metallic structures; (5) experience with machine and hand tools; (6) experience designing and constructing prototype structures from organic, metallic, and composite materials; (7) experience with quality protocols; (8) demonstrated problem-solving skills; (9) a willingness to work independently and as part of a mulitdisciplinary team; and (10) a willingness to occasionally work a flexible schedule. Candidate must be able to obtain a U.S. Department of Energy security clearance for this position. To obtain a security clearance, U.S. citizenship is required.
