NEVADA STATE TROOPER

DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety including the Nevada Highway Patrol, State Fire Marshals Office, Parole and Probation, Investigations, and Capitol Police.

CURRENTLY THERE ARE VACANCIES IN THE HIGHWAY PATROL DIVISION ONLY WITH THE MAJORITY OF VA CAN ICES IN LAS VEGAS, YOU MAY INDICATE YOUR PREFERENCE TO WORK IN OTHER DIVISIONS FOR CONSIDERATION SHOULD FUTURE VACANCIES OCCUR, HOWEVER, YOU WILL ONLY CONTINUE IN THE HIRING PROCESS IF YOU INDICATE WILLINGNESS TO WORK IN THE HIGHWAY PATROL DIVISION FIRST. Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. OR Incumbents perform basic tasks or elements of the job not requiring the additional knowledge, skills and abilities to perform at the next level in the series. For information regarding positions located in Southern Nevada, contact Tara Wheeler at (702) 486-3189 or at twheeler@dps.state.nv.us The DPS Officer I is trained to perform law enforcement duties in a law enforcement academy including formal classroom and practical field exercises. Class participation, coursework, assignments, and written performance examinations are reviewed and evaluated during the academy. Upon successful graduation from the academy, the incumbents either: 1) Work under supervision as a trainee within the Divisions of Highway Patrol, Parole & Probation, Investigation Divsion, or the State Fire Marshal's Office. Incumbents may progress to the next level upon meeting the minimum qualifications and with approval of the appointing authority; OR 2) Work under general supervision in the Capitol Police Division at the journey level performing foot and vehicular patrol of State owned and leased property including the Governors Mansion, or are assigned to a 24-hour desk operation receiving and relaying information to on-duty officers. To QualifyEducation and Experience1)Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of military service or public contact experience which included problem solving and applying policies to specific situations; OR Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, social work, fire science, or related field and one year of experience as described above; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social work, public administration, or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.Special Notes1)Applicant must meet current Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code. 2)Incumbent must pass the Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) fitness test and possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential functions of the position as a condition of continuing employment. 3)Incumbent must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy. Special Requirements1)Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. 2)A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. 3)This position is subject to call-out or call-back. 4)A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. 5)A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. 6)Statewide travel is required. 7)Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required. 8)The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a felony in this State or of any offense, which would be a felony if committed in this state.9)The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of any offense involving the illegal sale or manufacture of controlled substances.10)The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a D.U.I. within the last five years, or two D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime.11)The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of domestic violence.12)The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have used any illegal controlled substance within one year of the date of application including prescription drugs not prescribed to them.Additional Position Experience1)Must be a US Citizen and 21 years of age at the time of appointment.ExaminationExam Type: Written
The exam will consist of a written weighted 100%.

If there are five or fewer qualified applicants, the exam will consist of an application evaluation. (This statement does not apply for Until Recruitment Needs are Satisfied (URS) announcements).

NOTE: As part of the selection process, the Department of Public Safety will conduct: 1) Physical fitness exam which consists of a vertical jump of 14 inches, 15 sit-ups in 1 minute, 18 push-ups (not timed), a 300-meter run in 77 seconds, and a 1.5 mile run/walk in 17 minutes and 17 seconds; 2) Extensive background investigation; 3) A urinalysis; 4) Administers a polygraph investigation; 5) Require a physical examination. There is no fee charged to the applicant for the above five tests.
