Operations Engineer
The Operations Engineer at American Transmission Company (ATC) provides technical support to the System Operations department to help ensure the ongoing reliability of the electric transmission system while maintaining compliance with applicable reliability standards and regulations. This role interfaces with System Control, Transmission Planning, Project Management, Asset Management and the Midwest Independent System Operator (Midwest ISO) as needed to develop mitigation alternatives to real-time transmission system operating issues and to analyze future system conditions.
Commensurate with experience, the incumbent will perform and communicate various system reliability studies to assist the System Operations department in ensuring the safe reliable operation of the ATC transmission network.
Analyzes real-time status of the transmission system to ensure reliable operation under various operating scenarios. Evaluates unusual system operating conditions and events and makes recommendations to promote reliable system operation.
Utilizes a variety of software tools and analytical approaches not readily available to Operators, Outage Coordinators and Reliability Administrators.
Performs detailed network analysis to determine effect of scheduled maintenance and construction outages on reliability of the transmission system.
Reviews EMS State Estimator and Power Flow applications to verify model accuracy and consistency with actual and postulated operating conditions. Consults with System Planning, Asset Management and the Midwest ISO to help ensure core model consistency between Operations and Planning.
Works with System Planning to identify recurring system operating conditions and trends (i.e. low voltage, unusual flows, etc.) that may require further attention.
Partners with EMS Support Group and IT Department as needed to enhance and develop tools to support System Operations.
Performs special studies and assists with the development and/or revision of Operating Policies, Processes, Procedures, and Guides.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager, Operations Engineering.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent transmission system operating experience with a related degree is required.
Experience:
Knowledge of electric theory in the context of a transmission system operations and planning environment is required.
Some level of work experience in an electrical or non-electrical business operating environment is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
Work will primarily occur in an office environment. Occasional visits to high-voltage electric substations may be required following receipt of appropriate training.
