Optics Engineer - Telecommunications
Job Description
Lead optics engineering for optical transceiver products, spanning specification negotiation with Marketing and continuing through product development, NPI, manufacturing support and support of deployed product.
Responsibilities Simulate, design and characterize optical link budgets for fiber optics based ultra long haul DWDM transmission systems at data rates of 10Gb/s and greater Simulate, architect, design and characterize electro-optics circuits and associated interface circuits, including open and closed control loops Specify calibration strategies implemented in HW/SW for control and monitor circuits and control algorithms Author optical component specifications Characterize and perform design qualification of optical components Negotiate optical specifications with PLM Support PLM and Sales in RFQ response, and customer trials Select optical technologies for next generation transceiver products
Requirements Ability to model system performance using VPI, OptSim, Simulink, Matlab and other available tools to mitigate polarization, dispersion and non-linear effects Hands-on ability to perform experimental analysis of ULH DWDM transmission systems Familiarity with Telcordia, ITU-T, IEC, and MIL recommendations and standards relevant to optical communications components and equipment In-depth understanding of the fundamentals of high speed electro-optics and electronics, data multiplexing and processing, clocking schemes, PLL, analog control loops, reliability assessment Detailed knowledge of commercially available E/O components used in 10G transmission such as lasers, modulators, receivers, amplifiers and passive components Knowledge of deployed and next generation optical networking architectures and fiber optics based transmission systems Exceptional organizational ability and attention to detail
Qualifications M.Sc./PhD, in Physics or Electrical Engineering, with specialization in design and test of photonic sub-systems and lightwave communication systems Minimum of 10 years of related experience spanning full product life cycles Hands-on lab experience with optical measurements and optical test equipment
