This purpose of this position is to provide administrative, training and technical support and coordination of overall operations in the Brewhouse and Fermenting areas within the Brewing Department, to ensure efficient and cost effective use of personnel and materials in response to production demands. Ensure the maintenance of safety and quality standards in all department operations. Lead, supervise and develop six (6) direct reports and one (1) indirect report, management personnel and administrative staff and provide for the long-term technical and managerial development of all subordinates. With the advice of representatives of the Human Resources Department, administer union contracts and other letters of agreement with the bargaining units including attendance programs, employee development programs, disciplinary policies, etc. Establish and maintain employee relations within the department as part of fostering a suitable business climate for multi-cultural workforce. Handle special projects as assigned.* Academic: 4-year degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineering, Microbiology, Chemistry, Food and Beverage or other science.* Experience: Minimum of five (5) years in a front line supervisory position in a manufacturing / production environment. Basic understanding of labor relations issues and exposure to a union environment. Knowledge of World Class Manufacturing principles. Experience in a Brewery, Chemical Plant or Pharmaceutical Production facility preferred. Fundamental understanding of brewing processes.Competencies:* Review beer delivery to Fermentation and Aging on a continuous basis looking for ways to minimize disruptions and increase efficiency. Review Brewing schedules and bulk beer reports to ensure coordinated schedules and adequate supplies to meet output demand.* Provide direction to subordinate managers and provide for their technical development.* Foster concepts of continuous improvement, TQA, Six Sigma, TPM, JIT, WCM, etc., in support of the business plan for the Operations Department.* Assist in the management of department operations in accordance with brewery philosophy of participative management and in the most effective manner, consistent with quality assurance guidelines and cost concerns.* Coordinate Quality Education and Skills assessment and resultant matrices for the hot side.* Ensure that technical development, which primarily involves the acquiring of an acceptable working knowledge of the department operations, is continually upgraded through progressive training programs.* Acquire sufficient information on all systems used on the Hot Side to ensure smooth operations.* Provide business administration services to support department operations, ensuring necessary routine coordination with other departments.* Act as the principal Hot Side representative during the conducting of internal audits (i.e., CQS, GMP, Process, Safety)* Assist in the development of all departmental objectives and review performance against goals.* Provide input and development to departments for both operating and capital budgets and staffing allocation process.* Perform special projects as assigned.* Plan for and ensure the use of safe operating practices and procedures. Demonstrate commitment to safety through attendance at all monthly safety globals, participation on the wall-to-walls on a monthly basis, serving on a sub-committee of the Central Safety and Health Committee and other safety initiatives as directed. Assist in the provision for a workplace that is as safe and free from hazards as possible and where all employees adhere to good safety practices.* Plan for and ensure all quality standards and procedures are adhered to. Demonstrate commitment to quality through review of all quality trends, conduct GMP inspections, ensure training levels are adequate, and lead other quality initiatives as needed.* Demonstrate support for the overall brewery initiatives by volunteering for and playing an active role on brewery-wide committee(s).* Asset Care Planning and Execution.* Production and Material Planning and Execution.* Custodian for Performance Management.ROLES, SKILLS, AND ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED: Must be familiar with the various technical aspects of the Brewhouse and Fermenting operations and the associated equipment. Must have knowledge of accepted brewing practices and procedures. Must be familiar with production scheduling techniques, maintenance techniques and processes, workforce planning and their inter-relationships. Must be familiar with the basic maintenance concepts for installed equipment including maintenance routines and practices. Should have a good working knowledge of other department operational practices; i.e., Maintenance, Technical Services, Quality Services, etc. Must be able to analyze production reports and QS data to recognize adverse trends and be familiar with Quality Education requirements. Must be familiar with practices related to establishing, developing, and empowering salaried and hourly employees. Must be aware of financial impact of operational decisions on established budgets. Must have a general understanding of the practices associated with the development and administration of union contracts. Must be conversant with the concepts of manufacturing such as JIT, TPM, TQA, Six Sigma, WCM, etc. and be able to establish and implement plans for changing workplace strategies adopted by the company in pursuit of its business needs. Must have a working knowledge of OSHA regulations, EEO practices/policies, DOT regulations, BATF regulations, brewery safety regulations, FDA guidelines for food plant operations, and environmental regulations regarding manufacturing brewery operations and a good understanding of corporate support and resources. /
