Source System & Interface Developer
UW Medicine Information Technology Services department is a shared services organization, which supports all of UW Medicine. UW Medicine is comprised of UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, UW School of Medicine, and UW Physicians Network. The IT Services organization is responsible for ongoing support and maintenance of the infrastructure and applications which support these institutions, along with the implementation of new services and applications that are used to support and further the mission of patient care, research and teaching.
UW Medicine Information Technology Services department has an outstanding opportunity for a Source System & Interface Developer .
Under general direction, this position will participate as a member of both the Amalga Data Warehouse and the HL7 Integration Teams in building and maintaining data interfaces from existing Medical Center source systems into the “Amalga” data warehouse. This work will focus on quickly and efficiently learning the database structures, and outbound interface capabilities of existing UW Medicine information systems (see list below), and crafting sustainable real-time interfaces based on TCP/IP connectivity, and sustainable batch interfaces based on the SCP protocol.
This position will have responsibility for:
• Conducting moderate to complex analysis and design tasks for the development of each interface system;
• Performing complex programming in the development and implementation of interface systems with emphasis on minimizing support and maintenance requirements;
• Implementing interfaces in UW Medicine’s interface environment ensuring integrity of data and minimizing disruption to customers;
• Providing consultative support for maintenance of these interfaces, as needed by IT Services support staff.
Key responsibilities include:
• Perform inventory and analysis of all interfaces from existing systems that will feed data into Amalga
• Assist with the validation of data going into Amalga i.e. confirm that data sent by interfaces is accurately reflected within Amalga
• Play a lead role in the configuration and testing of interface connections into Amalga
• Provide Microsoft project team with access to required interfaces
• Answer questions about specific information sent in interfaces
• Pull in additional subject matter experts to assist with interfacing issues as needed
Typical Work:
• Responsible for the design, specification, and implementation of interface systems to the ‘Amalga’ data warehouse from:
• Reg/ADT system (locally-developed)
• Appointment scheduling system (Epic vendor)
• Pharmacy, Medical Records and Clinical system (Cerner vendor)
• Lab Medicine system (Misys vendor)
• Radiology reporting system (IDXRad vendor)
• Echocardiography system (Excellera vendor)
• other vendor-provided information systems in use at UW Medicine
• other locally developed information systems in use at UW Medicine
• Develop, test, and implement data transport interfaces from disparate data sources to a comprehensive data warehouse
• Perform thorough quality assurance testing to ensure all implemented interfaces are of the highest reliability
• Work closely with others to ensure that synchronization of data occurs with interfaced application systems across associated UW Medicine entities
• Manage these interface sub-projects and maintain interface project plans
• Work with other system programmers to minimize design and application program risks associated with interface implementation
• Work with other Amalga analysts to develop base and user views in accordance with the interface specifications and deployments
• Work directly with vendors in all phases of project implementation
• Collaborate as team member in all aspects of work
• Work with the HL7 Integration Team to develop in the development of interface systems
• Work with the ORCA / Cerner clinical systems team to analyze and define reporting and querying needs, and develop the pertinent interfaces from Cerner to Amalga
• Perform on-call duties as assigned
• Perform other duties as required
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
• Ability to evaluate and interpret end user information requirements, and to develop and implement appropriate technical solutions
• Three+ years of IT experience in the field of EDI, interfaces, healthcare information systems development and clinical data management
• Demonstrated xperience with healthcare interface standards such as HL7
Experience with HIPAA requirements pertaining to electronic healthcare transactions
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, business or applicable discipline, or a two year degree and equivalent work experience
• Three years progressively responsible experience in systems, programming and support, including
at least two years experience in application development using relational database technologies • Demonstrated experience with C, Java or other high-level programming language
• Ability to work independently and to adapt to new and changing technologies
• Must include experience in development of complex real-time interfaces in a TCP/IP environment
• Experience with scripting languages eg. Tcl and PERL
• Two years experience with Microsoft Windows operating system
• Ability to work effectively with programmers of various levels of technical background
• Ability to work effectively with users of various levels of technical background
• Demonstrated experience in support of production systems
