Location: CRYSTAL CITY, VA 22202 Status: Full Time Job Category: Biotech/R&D/Science Job Reference ID Number: 3980 Staff Scientist Serves as Staff Scientist in the an intelligence cell, rotating between CONUS and OCONUS locations in Iraq and Afghanistan on 6-month intervals. Advises the team leader on all issues pertaining to the scientific aspects of weapons technical intelligence.Assists in preparing written reports from technical information related to adversary weapons into formats readily used by intelligence consumers throughout the counter-IED community. Utilizes scientific community experience to satisfy requests for information (RFI)from sponsoring activity, Coalition units, intelligence organizations, CIED rapid-acquisition organizations, and other agencies. Uses scientific expertise to enable forward-deployed weapons technical intelligence organizations to improve their collection capabilities, as well as to advise team leaders and sponsoring activity on potential impact of significant new IED construction trends. Facilitates the free flow of information from forward-deployed units to units and organizations in CONUS, and vice versa. Major Responsibilities: Advise the team leader of the intelligence cell on all scientific aspects of weapons technical intelligence; Conduct outreach to other experts in the scientific and academic communities to help solve problems in the counter-IED fight; Refine collection requirements for the detection of emplaced IEDs based upon the scientific signatures of IED activity. Assist the team leader on managing requirements and disseminating intelligence from weapons technical intelligence units to other organizations in the counter-IED community; When in CONUS, serve as a reachback element to forward-deployed CM&D teams. Knowledge Base, Capabilities and Special Skills: Familiarity with intelligence operations and activities, to include the intelligence cycle and report writing. Build an understanding of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) tactics, techniques, and procedures; and EOD operations within the Iraq or Afghan theaters of operation. Skill in developing written materials and verbal presentations to convey information concerning highly technical and complex ideas to other technical experts, as well as to non-technical layman analysts. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, common e-mail and web browser systems, and other information technologies. Understanding of forensics, physics, engineering, or electronics are not mandatory, but highly desirable. Background or experience in several of the following scientific fields of explosives: Explosives/energetics Toxicity Plasticizers Volatility Density Hygroscopicity Munitions Manufacturing of homemade explosives Bulk military explosives Blast effects Familiarity with military operations, law enforcement operations, and evidence collection and investigative procedures.
