Mechanic III - Generator Shop (Diesel)

General Description of Responsibilities:

 Performs at the journeyman level under general supervision.Disassembles, repairs, and reassembles engine-driven generating units and other related mechanical machinery and/or equipment.Performs predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance on engine-driven generating units and related mechanical equipment.Operates and maintains engine-driven generating units.Must be capable of performing generator load bank tests.Performs minor electrical circuit preventive maintenance.Gains knowledge and skill of the trade for the next higher level.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

 Performs major maintenance and overhaul of engine-driven generating units.Performs testing, troubleshooting, and diagnosing of diesel and gas engines.Rebuilds mechanical governors.Operates and parallels engine-driven generating units.Adjusts electronic governors.Inspects, maintains and repairs fuel and lube oil systems and air compressors.Reads and interprets blueprints and drawings.Takes prompt and effective actions in emergency situations.Assists electricians with the installation, cable splicing and repairs of electrical circuits.Performs all work in accordance with federal, state, and local safety requirements.  Understands and utilizes Personal Protective equipment.Assists project coordinators with planning and scheduling of new and existing projects.Maintains records to reflect operational and maintenance data.Assists in the instruction of shop personnel to become more knowledgeable and proficient in their duties.Will work in harmony and cooperate with other shop personnel.Interacts with customers to ensure service and support is accomplished.

 

 

 

 

WORK CONDITIONS:

 Work is performed primarily outdoors.Work hours are subject to change, with overtime work as needed.Subject to high noise levels.Subject to exposure in a tropical environment and industrial complex setting.Tasks may be performed on potential uneven, inclined surfaces, hard floors, concrete structures and surfaces.Subject to working in confined spaces such as manholes and vaults.Must be capable of flying in helicopters and traveling for extended periods in marine vessels.

 

AUTHORITIES AND LIMITATIONS ON AUTHORITY:

 Will report directly to the Generator Shop Electrician Lead on a daily basis.Will act as crew leader when assigned a crew of technicians.

 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS (Education, Experience, & Professional Association):

 

Mandatory

 Requires a High School diploma or the equivalent.Must be able to communicate well in the English language both orally and written.Sufficient skills in making simple mathematical calculations required of the position.Must be able to select and use proper tools, equipment and materials.A minimum of four years experience as an engine-driven generating unit mechanic.Will be aware of and practice good safety habits.Must maintain a valid driver’s license.Must be able to operate heavy trucking equipment.Requires willingness to learn all aspects of the position’s duties.Should support and promote productivity, efficiency, cost awareness and methods of improvement.

 

Preferred

 College degreeKnowledge, application and hands-on experience in Caterpillar engine-driven generating equipment.Utilization of US Army Maintenance Management System.
