Agriculturist; Leading Sugar Beet Company
If you have experience as an Agriculturist, with a Bachelors Degree in Agronomy, Ag Economics or a related field; have demonstrated Management/Supervisory experience; with experience in Food Processing/Manufacturing (Sugar Beet preferred); and would like to work for a Sugar-beet Cooperative that is owned by some 2,900 growers in the Red River Valley of North Dakota and Minnesota that farms more than one-half million owned and contracted acres of cropland. This Sugar Company was formed in 1899 and converted into a co-op in 1973, divides the 35-mile-wide valley into five districts, each served by a processing plant. The processing plants produce sugar, molasses, and beet pulp. This position covers Moorhead, Hillsboro, EGF, Crookston, Drayton; and the position is located out of Drayton, ND. The Agriculturists reports to the Agronomy Manager (as do the Sr. Agriculturists and Ag Office Coordinators), with the Ag Scouts directly reporting to the Agriculturists. The purpose of this position is to provide expertise to growers in the production of a high quality beet crop and an increase in the recoverable sugar per acre. Beet Crop: 350,000 – 450,000 tons / $14M - $32M ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS· Maintain established company and department policies, procedures, deadlines, and budget constraints. Provides technical expertise to growers in the production and harvest of a high quality sugarbeet crop with minimal production costs. Develops and executes plans to achieve goals of Ag 6600 production. Maintains Grower Practice System by recording activities relative to each field and makes timely and accurate recommendations to growers to improve the profitability of their crop through the use of fertilizer, seed varieties, herbicides, and pesticides. Assists in the implementation of new technology, where appropriate, in crop production. Maintains current knowledge of new research and technological changes in the field of sugarbeet agriculture. Provides information to growers through personal contacts and group meetings. Attends industry-related agricultural meetings held in the district to obtain new information. Makes recommendations on beet seed variety selections to growers based on individual needs and seed varieties available. Assists growers with harvest equipment and improved harvest techniques to maximize sugar recovery per acre. Prepares stock transfer applications and forwards to the Agronomy Manager for initial approval. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:Ø Makes recommendations to assist growers in the production of a high quality beet crop with an increase in recoverable sugar and minimal production costs. Ø Maintains Grower Practice System to ensure appropriate information is available for decision making purposes.Ø Maintains current knowledge of new research and technological changes to ensure growers receive up-to-date information on sugar-beet agriculture.Ø Provide advice to growers on herbicides, pesticides, etc.Ø Promotes beet seed variety selection to growers to contribute to the profitability of this Sugar Company and the grower.Ø Assists in the implementation of new technology in crop production.Ø Assists growers with harvest equipment and improved harvest techniques to maximize sugar recovery per acre.Ø Ensures stock transfers are complete before forwarding to Agronomy Managers for approval.Ø Training to the growers in a meeting setting a few times a year The Agriculturist has the latitude to complete the above responsibilities within general guidelines provided by the Agronomy Manager. · Hires and supervises activities of summer Ag Scouts within company guidelines. · Problems of an unusual nature are referred to the Agronomy Manager for discussion and resolution. JOB REQUIREMENTS: Agri-business background; Sugar Beets experience preferred / Food processing/manufacturing necessary Bachelors Degree in Agronomy, Ag Economics or a related field Two to three (2-3) years of experience.
