Aerospace and Defense Practice Specialist

McKinsey's High Tech Group shapes the agenda of most of the global leaders in the High Tech industry, serving industry and market segment leaders, private equity investors, and government agencies in: Aerospace and Defense, Semiconductors and Components, Enterprise Hardware, Data Communications Equipment, Industrial Technology, Consumer Electronics, Software and High Tech Services.
The Aerospace and Defense Practice provides deep expertise to Aerospace and Defense companies and related government agencies on: strategy, product development, manufacturing, supply chain, logistics, finance, marketing and sales, and organizational topics.
The A&D Practice Specialist also works with the Practice leaders to enhance McKinsey’s industry-wide reputation. And the A&D Practice Specialist acts as a “go to” person for Practice membership and leadership, and assumes the role of overall coordinator and facilitator for the Practice.
Responsibilities include:
· Client service -
§ Work with a client service team as a full or part-time team member, and/or support client teams in A&D engagements
· Contribute to engagement tasks that relate to solving the client’s challenges:
· Interview clients and industry experts
· Analyze and interpret client and industry information, and develop hypotheses
based on client research, industry best practices and other information sources
§ Work with the team to synthesize output into specific and actionable business recommendations and action steps
· Knowledge building and knowledge transfer -
§ Develop, research, analyze, and refine concepts, trends, points of view, and problem solving tools that can be brought to bear in client engagements
§ Codify internal knowledge and industry best practices for internal syndication
§ Lead client and internal training workshops
· Reputation building -
§ Work with external organizations to identify and structure appropriate public venues for presenting A&D Practice research
§ Collaborate with general business and industry publications on featuring A&D Practice insights
· Practice management -
§ 10% of the A&D Practice Specialist’s time is devoted to assignments related to the ongoing improvement and effectiveness of the A&D Practice.
§ This includes organizing A&D Practice conference calls and meetings, managing A&D Practice resources
The amount of time spent in each of these areas will vary depending upon the A&D Practice Specialist’s tenure with McKinsey and commensurate skills and experience; however, the ideal candidate will contribute on all dimensions outlined above.
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
· Strong academic qualifications, and preferably an advanced degree
· 2+ years of strategy consulting experience, preferably with engagement management/ project management experience
· Experience working with senior executives and/or McKinsey partners
· 3+ years experience in an Aerospace and/or Defense company or related government agency in a strategy or operational capacity (or an equivalent degree of industry exposure)
· In-depth knowledge of Aerospace and/or Defense industry related issues
· The ability to transition easily from theoretical perspectives to practical business considerations, and vice versa
· An entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to get things done
· Strong interpersonal and analytic skills
· Strong communications skills – both oral and written
