WHAT IS THE POSITION?
The Retirement Plans Group’s (RPG) mission is to be the premier provider of innovative wealth creation and financial protection solutions for institutions, corporate and government employers and high net worth individuals. Our track record over the past 5 years has been solid as evidenced by our strong financial performance and business growth. Recently, RPG announced the intent to purchase three strategically selected businesses which bring us additional scale, added technology and service capabilities, as well as breadth and depth of distribution channels and partners.
This position will help us transition to this new era, primarily working on financial modeling of retirement products, mainly 401(k) business, and the various business segments in the small plan and mid-market spaces with exposure to the pricing of municipal and not-for-profit defined contribution plans such as 457, 403(b) and 401(a) plans. The position will be critical to the success of our acquisition strategy and will be an opportunity for the successful candidate to play a role in setting the vision and determining what our business is going to look like in the future.
This RPG experience will provide the candidate with an opportunity to develop a wide range of competencies. In addition to the analytical skills required and the business knowledge that will be developed, this position requires significant interaction with many areas, including our field sales force, internal sales support, IPD Financial, the 401(k) service center, product development, Corporate Actuarial, legal, marketing, and more. A creative approach to work assignments is encouraged and desired, and the ability to work independently and adjust to an evolving line of business will be critical. As you can see, the work will be very diverse and offer many touch points within RPG. Lastly, we work hard at being winners but are also big on celebrating our successes as well!
The candidate will be offered entry into Hartford's Executive Actuarial Rotational Training (HEART) Program, providing minimum entry requirements are met. The HEART program provides support for actuarial examinations, and leadership and professional development.
The HEART Program assists students to develop core skill areas such as Personal Commitment, Interpersonal Relations, Analytical Skills, Business/Organizational Knowledge and Leadership.
Actuarial students rotate within Hartford Life to professionally develop into successful actuaries. Actuarial students drive the rotation process, both in terms of timing and destination, choosing from available positions within the company. Rotations vary in length from eighteen months to two years, with the minimum rotation set at 12 months.
Actuarial students receive 130 study hours every six months to study for actuarial examinations. The HEART program provides comprehensive exam support, including examination fees, exam and study materials. Students may attend one seminar per examination, subject to minimal restrictions. Salary increases are automatic upon passing actuarial examinations.
Major responsibilities of this position include:
Job responsibilities involve a wide range of actuarial work, including the following: Financial modeling of all retirement business, including new acquisitions Perform experience studies and incorporate findings into pricing and business strategy Monitor business financials Continually strive to improve and enhance pricing methodologies Providing support to our service center on pricing related issues that arise on new business as well as the inforce book of business Ad hoc financial support for RPG Management
Qualifications:
Strong technical and analytical skills Strong written and verbal communication skills Proficiency in Excel Experience in modeling in TAS or Moses is a plus but not necessary Ability to form and maintain strong working relationships with individuals of all levels from other departments Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities and respond quickly to new assignments Ability to work independently and exhibit leadership Positive and winning attitude
